Schramsberg - California , USA
In 1862, German immigrants Jacob and Annie Schram established Schramsberg as the first winery with vineyards planted on the hillsides of the Napa Valley. With the help of Chinese labourers, vineyards replaced scrub oak, and a network of underground caves was tunnelled into the soft, volcanic rock.
Since the re-birth of the winery in 1965, both critics and consumers have lauded each release of this celebrated producer. It could be argued that on price Schramsberg will often outperform Champagne houses of far greater repute.Widely regarded as California’s top sparkling wine producer.
The wines are produced from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown in a broad array of cool-climate North Coast vineyards located in Napa, Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin counties. The Blanc de Blancs was used for President Nixon’s 1972 “Toast to Peace” with China’s Premier Zhou Enlai. Schramsberg’s sparkling wines have been served at official State functions by every U.S. Presidential administration since.
